Hiring a web designer in London: what to ask and what it costs

A practical guide for London small businesses choosing a web designer: the questions to ask about contracts, ownership, hosting and launch times, and what it really costs.

When you hire a web designer in London as a small business, ask four things before price: how long the contract runs, who owns the site, what hosting and support include, and how quickly it can launch. Then compare the total cost over a few years, not just the first invoice. A one-off agency build usually means a large upfront fee plus separate running costs. A monthly plan spreads everything into one fee. Studio 61 is a UK web studio and Webflow Certified Partner that works with small businesses in London and across the UK, with plans from £189 a month, no upfront build fee, and most sites live in three to six weeks.

London has no shortage of web designers, from freelancers to large agencies. That choice is useful, but it also makes quotes hard to compare. This guide covers the questions that cut through the noise, so you can judge any designer fairly, including us.

Do you need a web designer based in London?

Not necessarily. What matters is that your designer understands your customers, communicates clearly and is easy to reach when something needs changing.

A designer who knows the London market can help, particularly if you rely on local searches such as a service plus your borough. But most of the work, from kick-off calls to design reviews, now happens comfortably over video. A UK-based team working in your time zone and pricing in pounds sterling covers most of what a London small business needs.

What does a web designer in London cost?

The honest answer is that it depends on how the designer charges, and the headline price rarely tells the whole story. There are two common models.

A one-off build. You pay a fee upfront, often in stages, for a finished website. London agencies may carry higher overheads, which can show up in their rates. After launch, hosting, security updates and changes are usually billed separately, or left for you to sort out.

A monthly plan. Sometimes called website as a service, this replaces the upfront fee with one monthly payment covering design, build, hosting and ongoing support. We explain the model in how website as a service works.

To compare them fairly, add up everything you would pay over three to five years: the build, hosting, your domain, maintenance and the cost of changes. Our true cost calculator helps you do this, and our guide to the true cost of a website explains the running costs people tend to forget.

What should you ask about contract length?

Contract terms matter more than most people expect, especially on monthly plans. A low monthly fee can come with a long minimum term or a hefty exit fee.

How long is the minimum term? Find out how long you are committed for, and whether that changes after the first period.

What notice do you need to give? Ask how you leave and how much warning is required.

Can the price go up? Ask whether the monthly fee can rise, how often and by how much.

Can you change plans? Your needs will change as the business grows. At Studio 61 you can move up a plan at any time.

Ask for the answers in writing. Our honest comparison of pay monthly website services goes into exit terms in more detail.

Who owns the website?

This is the question people most often regret not asking. It helps to separate four things: your content (words and images), your data (such as enquiries and analytics), your domain name and the website build itself.

Ask what happens to each of these if you leave. Can you take your content with you? Is the domain registered in your name? Can the site be transferred, or does it stay with the designer?

On every Studio 61 plan, you own your content and data. Whoever you speak to, get the ownership terms in writing rather than relying on a friendly conversation.

What do hosting and support actually include?

Hosting is the server space that keeps your website online. Support is the help you get after launch. Both vary a lot between designers, so ask specific questions.

Is hosting included, or billed separately? Check whether your domain and SSL certificate (the security certificate that shows the padlock in the browser) are covered too.

Who handles backups and security updates? If something breaks, you want to know it can be restored quickly.

How do you request changes? Ask whether edits are included, how much time you get each month and whether extra work is charged by the hour.

Who will you actually speak to? Find out whether support comes from the people who built the site, a separate team or an overseas helpdesk.

The platform matters here too. Some platforms need regular plugin updates to stay secure, while others need far less upkeep. Our comparison of Webflow vs WordPress covers the differences.

How quickly can a website launch?

Ask for a realistic timeline and what it depends on. A designer who promises a date without asking about your content is guessing.

In practice, content is the most common reason projects stall: the words, photos and service details only you can provide. Ask how the designer helps with this. We use a content-first process so you are editing drafts rather than starting from a blank page.

If you already have a site that brings in search traffic, also ask how they will protect it during the move. Our guide to redesigning without losing your Google rankings explains what to check.

One-off build or monthly plan: which suits a London small business?

Neither is right for everyone. It depends on your budget, how hands-on you want to be and how often your site needs to change.

A one-off build may suit you if you have the budget upfront, want to own the full build outright and are comfortable arranging hosting and updates yourself or paying for them separately.

A monthly plan may suit you if you want a professional site without a large initial outlay, prefer one predictable cost and want someone on hand to make changes as you grow.

The trade-off with a monthly plan is that you keep paying for as long as you use it. The trade-off with a one-off build is that running costs arrive as separate, less predictable bills. We compare the two in pay monthly vs upfront websites.
